Large cent coin
- Minted from 1793 to 1857, when it was officially replaced by the modern-size one-cent coin
- Made of 100% copper with an original face value of 1/100 of a dollar
- Contained twice as much copper as the half cent
- All large cents were minted in Philadelphia
- Obverse design was modified through the years
- The final designs were called the Coronet Cents and featured the “Matron Head” designs that gave Liberty a slimmer, more youthful appearance
Indian Head cent copper-nickel
- The Indian Head one-cent coin was produced by the United States Bureau of the Mint from 1859 to 1909
- The copper-nickel versionwas only minted from 1859-1864. During 1864 the US Mint changed the composition of the coins to bronze.
- Designed by James Barton Longacre, the Chief Engraver at the Philadelphia Mint
1909 Lincoln Wheat Ears VDB cent
- Introduced in 1909 to celebrate the 100th anniversary of Lincoln’s birth
- First U.S. circulating coin to bear a president’s image
- 1909 was the only year that the designerβs initials VDB appeared on the reverse of the coin
